Q: How does Toys N Tots test our toys for lead?

A: Toys N’ Tots uses the latest in XRF technology. X-Ray Fluoresence Technology is the only technology approved by the EPA for use to detect lead.

Q: There are home testing kits available for testing lead. Why wouldn’t I just use one of those kits?

A: Both the CDC ( Center for Disease Control ) and the USCPS ( United States Consumer Product Safety Commission ) both do not regard home testing kits as a reliable method for detecting lead in the home.

Q: Won’t the U.S Government eventually improve inspection at our borders for lead? Why should we have to do it at our home?

A: Simply put, the sheer volume of toys being imported into the USA is astronomical. Over 1 billion toys each year reach our shores and there is no way for the government to inspect each and every one of them. There are over 70,000 factories in China alone. It is a logistical impossibility to inspect all of them.

Q: What do I receive when Toys N’ Tots conducts an in home inspection of my children’s toys?

A: We will scan and catalogue each of the toys we inspect. A detailed report will be furnished to you before our technician leaves your home. Any failed, or questionable toys will be brought to your attention. We can dispose of the toys for you, or provide you with references to do so on your own.

Q: What makes a toy unsafe?? How much lead is too much?

A: Well, the CDC, EPA, and the USCPSC all agree that zero lead should be the goal. Currently, however, the import requirement issued by the USCPSC is 600 ppm ( parts per million ). Anything greater than 600 ppm is deemed unsafe and in violation of import safety laws. Toy’s N’ Tots uses 500 ppm as our limit. You will see the actual measurement on all of the toys we test for you. If you feel more comfortable removing toys with any traces of lead, you have the power to do so.

Q: Can my children be around during the testing process?

A: Absolutely, Toys N’ Tots encourages families to allow children to be present during the screening process. We want them to know we are checking to see if any of their precious toys are sick.
